Miguel Costa, brazilian rising star in international karting, stood out at the FIA Karting World Championship at the PF International Kart Circuit in England. The driver managed to climb 18 positions in the final race in the rain, after starting 29th and finishing 11th.
“I had a great final in very difficult conditions and managed to climb from P29 to P11. There was a lot of spray on the track because of the water that the karts in front were throwing back. My visor fogged up, I drove with it open and I got a lot of water in my face during the race, but it was amazing to finish like that. I’m proud of this race,” says Miguel, who finished the competition as the best South American.
Miguel believes that if he had one more lap in qualifying he could fight for pole position in the heats. “Qualifying in the World Championship is always decisive and we wanted to do five laps, two warming up the kart and three fast laps. We ended up doing only four laps because we were just a second short of crossing the line, while our opponents did one more lap. Our last lap would certainly have been pole position. We ended up falling into a very difficult group, with drivers who defended their position a lot, but that’s part of it,” says Miguel.
The FIA Karting World Championship had more than 100 drivers entered in the OK category and it was Miguel’s last competition in this class before he made the transition to formula cars. The brazilian also caught the eye in the qualifying heats with a top-five finish and the best lap in another race.
“It was a special way to end my career in the OK category, both in the dry and in the wet we showed the pace to be in the top-5. I’ve met and learned from a lot of people along the way, I’m eternally grateful to everyone who has supported and guided me over the years. I would like to say a special thank you to the VictoryLane team for the two races in which I was part of this incredible family,” adds Miguel.
The driver still has one last race in the KZ2 World Championship in Portimão, Portugal, before announcing his next steps. The competition will take place between October 10 and 13, but Miguel will start training at the circuit next week.
