Rookie champion of the 2019 Italian Karting Championship, Miguel Costa competed in another SKUSA Winter Series stage last weekend in Homestead, Florida. Youngest Brazilian representative in an international pilots' academy, Costa got his first victory with the Sauber Karting Team and valued his recovery in the championship’s standings.
“It was an almost perfect weekend here at SKUSA. I was the champion on Saturday and the go-kart was very fast. On Sunday, I had the victory in my hands, I blocked it correctly and my opponent passed me off the track. It had been explained in briefing that this could not happen, but he did not take any penalty. Anyway, I leave with my head held high, knowing that I got a great race once again. We are recovering in the championships standings”, says Miguel. Miguel had his first years in karting competing in the United States, winning competitions in Miami, Florida. The driver also piled up good results at the World Kart ROK in 2018 and 2019, the year he moved to Europe to compete in Italy. In his debut year in Europe, Miguel was rookie champion of the Italian Kart Championship with three victories.
In January, the 10-year-old driver was hired to be part of the Sauber Karting Team, linked to the Alfa Romeo F1 team. The Brazilian, who is in Europe where he participates in the complete season of the WSK (World Series Karting), is the youngest driver to have this type of link in a talent development program linked to a team in F1.
Costa says that SKUSA should be his last major tournament in the USA. “Now the intention and focus is to race 100% in Europe with Sauber. In addition, I am very happy to win my first race with Sauber and we are all very satisfied with this SKUSA's stage. Now, we are going for another WSK's stage this February”, says Miguel. The young driver's next challenge will be at the WSK Super Master, which will have its second round between February 20th and 23rd in Lonato, Italy.
