Motorsport can be very complicated at some moments. And that was what Miguel Costa experienced last weekend, in the contest of the World Karting Championship, held at the Napoli International Circuit, in the Italian city of Sarno. The Sauber Academy Brazilian member lined up top-5 and top-10 in the qualifying heats, showing good performances, but problems took him out of the decision this Sunday (18).
The driver arrived at Sarno as one of the favourite for the OK Junior class title, as he had two top-5 finishes at the track, obtained in the WSK and in the Italian Karting Championship. A mistake in qualifying, however, put him behind in the qualifying heats. There, Miguel shone, achieving a fifth and a seventh place in races of only seven laps. On Saturday, there was still an eighth position.
Despite the positive results, the Brazilian did not complete two heats. In one of them, Costa was collected in an accident, while in the other, when he was already battling for positions further ahead, the engine of his kart broke down, preventing the achievement of another good result. Worse: this threw Miguel backwards in the grid of the pre-final, where even climbing 16 positions, he ended up staying out of the final.
“The championship did not go as we expected. I came from a fifth place in the WSK and a fourth place in the Italian Championship. I was one of the favourites for the title, but a mistake in qualifying put us behind in the qualifying heats. Even with good races, an engine failure and an accident didn’t let us reach the decision. It was a shame, because I know we could fight in front if we didn’t have problems,” said Miguel, who congratulated Matheus Morgatto for the world title in the OK class.
“I really thank those who cheered for me. And I also want to congratulate Matheus Morgatto, who won this title for the Brazilian motor sport. My ‘little brother’ is now world champion in OK”, added Miguel.
