Young driver Miguel Costa, who is part of the Sauber Karting Team’s talent program in Europe, will compete in 2021 European Championship, which starts on May 13th in Genk, Belgium. Competing with the Kart Republic chassis, the 12-year-old Brazilian valued the good days of testing in France this week and projected new achievements in European karting after finishing the WSK Super Master Series as the best rookie in the OK Junior category.
“We have now left France. We had three days of very good tests, I was more comfortable on the tires, the chassis was better and I think we will be better prepared for next week’s race. Both me as a driver and the team with the new tires. The European Championship will be very cool and I am very anxious to start a new trajectory of achievements”, says Miguel, who uses the Kart Republic chassis in the kart number #208 and has the support of Baked Potato and Participa.
In his debut season in the OK Junior category, Miguel was already featured in the WSK at the beginning of the year and conquered a top-5 in the Final at the La Conca round, in addition to finishing the championship as the best rookie and with an emphasis on overtaking. The young driver’s first race in the category, in fact, took place when he was just 11 years old – OK Junior houses drivers between 12 and 14 years old.
Last weekend, in addition, the Brazilian driver also competed in the European Championship Open, a tournament that is traditionally held on the same circuit as the next round, where many drivers use it as a way of adapting to the track. Even after a weekend with difficulties in the OK Junior category, Miguel believes in the work of evolving to the next stages with the Sauber Karting Team.
“It was a weekend of great learning for the whole team and in logistics with the tires, which had a problem in delivery due to COVID-19. The round started difficult with the disqualification (a mechanic of the team had a tool in the closed park). Even starting last in all heats, I was the driver with the highest number of overtakes. Were it not for that, we would be in the final. Even so, we had a good time and we believe that it is possible to fight for a place among the first this month in Belgium”, adds Miguel.
The first of the four rounds of the European Karting Championship will happen in Genk, Belgium, between 13 and 16 May.
