Last weekend, young Miguel Costa was in New Orleans to compete on the SKUSA Pro Tour, famous US kart tournament that brings together competitors from various parts of the Americas. There were two days of timed training on the track, but the championship was suspended due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic worldwide. Despite having led a good part of training, Costa believes that everyone's health should always be a priority.
“We had two days of training last week, I was top-5 in the first and I was the fastest in the second session. So, everything was going well on the track, but we have to prioritize the well-being of everyone. I hope this disease will soon be cured. It is a very delicate moment for everyone. Obviously nobody wants to stay at home and not keep racing, but at the moment it is necessary to guarantee the health of everyone involved in sporting events ”, says Costa.
Sauber Karting Team pilot, Miguel is the youngest Brazilian representative in an international driver academy connected with an F1 team (Alfa Romeo). Costa, who is 11 years old, had his first years in karting competing in the USA, winning several competitions in Florida. The driver also accumulated good results at the World Kart ROK in 2018 and 2019, the year he also started competing in Italy.
Even with a break in competitions, Costa believes that this will not affect his development and values the good driving phase in recent months. “I believe that I am evolving more and more and the results are showing, so it is a phase of my career that I seek to learn more and more. We will work hard after everything gets better with this pandemic. I am rooting for all competitions in the sport to return as quickly as possible and that in Italy the number of infected people is gets fewer and fewer ”, says Costa, who was rookie champion of Italian Karting in 2019.
The young driver will go home in the coming days and awaits the definition of the new karting calendar in 2020, which should be published after a possible improvement of Covid-19
